Our nation decided more than 50 years ago that when businesses open their doors to the public, they should be Open to All.
Yet, in more than half the country, our state laws still do not explicitly protect LGBT Americans from discrimination in stores and restaurants, in the workplace, or in housing. But even when laws are in place, we know that people are often still harassed, policed, and even denied service—such as people of color facing abuse and violence in diners, Muslim women being ordered to leave a café, or people with disabilities being harassed in a restaurant.
It is important to recognize the impact of this kind of bias and discrimination in public accommodations and the decades-long struggle for all people to be treated fairly and equally in public spaces—regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion or disability.
That’s why fair-minded Americans are joining together to support updating our nondiscrimination laws and engaging with businesses in their communities to be Open to All.
